In this video essay from Dorkly on Youtube. Tony Wilson explains why the Spider-Man movies directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire are the best adaptations of the famous web crawler. I loved Into the Spiderverse and Tom Holland’s version of the character is a lot of fun, but they never showed the struggle of the character like Raimi’s versions had. Check out the video below and let me know what you think.

I think Holland plays the Peter Parker role well, but I do agree. Raimi’s take on the character felt more like Spider-Man (even though I didn’t care for the third film). I wasn’t blown away be either Spider-Verse or Homecoming but really like Raimi’s first two films. They feel more personal in large part because of the struggle you mention. Holland’s feels like an MCU Spider-Man, less personal and meant to serve a greater entity (in this case the MCU).
No I agree Holland was quite good for his work in those films. I like Into Spiderverse a Lot but would be really excited if they did sequel that focused solely on Spider-Ham , Spider-Gwen. Give us a full black and white Spider-Noir feature with Nicholas Cage
Like Keith, Holland is my favorite Peter but I think Raimi has had the best interpretation of the character. If we had a Raimi film with the MCU Spider-Man cast, I think that might be the perfect Spider-Man movie universe.
I have heard many people complain that Rami’s Spider-Man was too whiny. I never got that from watching those films. But than again those people never once read the comics. Thanks for reading Drew
I do have a soft spot for the Sam Raimi films as I do love what Tobey Maguire did with the film while I also do love what Tom Holland is doing. It’s kind of hard to choose between the two. At least it’s not the ones with Andrew Garfield though blame should really go to studio than Garfield for fucking that franchise up bad.
But Hey they did get Emma Stone to play Gwen Stacey. I just with they had a better writer on those films
Emma Stone was alright but man, they didn’t do anything with her in the 2nd film. I hated that film but Stone did a film much worse than that in the horror that was… Aloha.
I haven’t gotten a chance to watch the video but I’ve always enjoyed the first two Raimi Spider-man films. I thought Tobey did a good job. Tom does too, but I can see why his struggle feels different since they don’t want to do yet another origin story for him.
