The Vern tokes up and reviews The Beach Bum(2019)

When you mention the name Harmony Korine.  Right away there will be many people there that will avoid this movie at all cost.  The Director of Spring Breakers and Gummo certainly has a distinct style and the man has his fans but certainly a lot of haters as well.  His new movie The Beach Bum will be no different and I won’t fault anyone for not liking this flick.   But I can’t lie and say I did not have fun with this one, folks.  Does it have problems.  Oh Yes.  Yes it does, but it’s still very funny.  Matthew McConaughey shines in the lead role as Moondog and the supporting cast including Snoop Dog, Isla Fisher, Martin Lawrence, Jimmy Buffett and more are all very good.

From the opening description in your review, the story sounds like a trashier version of The Great Beauty(also with a washed-up writer who is a bit stuck in life). Curious to see McConaughey’s performance and the multiple montages. I’ll try and approach it as Dazed and Confused sequel as you suggest.

I do want to see this because of Harmony Korine as the only films of his I haven’t seen are Mister Lonely, Trash Humpers, and several other short films he’s done.

  3. Brittani says:

I would watch this but my theater put the least effort possible in showtimes and is only showing it at 9:30pm. And they’ll probably dump it by next week. I guess this is a DVD watch for me.
