Best Movies of 2017 and The Vern Visits 3 Amazing Podcasts

Hello Everyone

I hope you had a great week and are enjoying the new year.   Speaking of which I am behind on posting my favorite movies of 2017 for this site.

Here is  20-10 of what I feel are the best movies of 2017.  The only criteria is that all the movies in this list are ones I saw in theaters

20. Una

Rooney Mara is getting praise for her work in A Ghost Story, but this is one that stuck with me after I saw it last year at the Minneapolis/ St. Paul International Film Fest.  The Story involves a woman(Mara) who after 20 years tracks down the man who sexually assaulted her.  Not to get revenge but to get back with him and rekindle their relationship.  It’s a movie that I was indeed shocked by and a little bit disturbed with.  But it’s performances from the cast still stuck with me long after I saw it  Yeah I need to post a full review for Cinema Recall ASAP

19 The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

I had many problems with this movie, but it is god damn beautiful to look at.  Listen or read my review at Cinema Recall(over at That Moment In) by clicking here

18.  The Year of Spectacular Men

I didn’t get a chance to see Lady Bird this year, but I enjoyed this directorial debut from Lea Thompson.   She made this movie with her daughters Madelyn and Zooey Deutch and I enjoyed watching this at the Twin Cities Film Festival. Plus I did meet Lea Thompson and she did sign my copy of Howard The Duck and that is awesome  You can read or listen to more of my thoughts by visiting Cinema Recall(over at That Moment in) by clicking here

17.   John Wick 2

I didn’t like this one as much as the first one but the fights are kick ass.  Keanu Reeves is awesome and  it ends with one of the best cliff hangers for John Wick 3

16. Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot is to Wonder Woman what Christopher Reeves s to Superman.  It’s an iconic part that she will forever be typed cast, and you know what.  That is way better than winning any award

15. Ingrid Goes West.

Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen were both good, but the real star of this movie was O’ Shea Jackson Jr,

14.  Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2

A moment on why this movie is  great.

Star- lord to Yondu: “You look like Mary Poppins”

Yondu: “Is he Cool?

Star-Lord: “Yeah, He’s Cool”

Yondu: I’m Mary Poppins, Yall

13. Spider Man- Homecoming

A welcome return of my favorite insect next to Brundlefly (Click, you know you want to)

12.  Baby Driver

The Soundtrack is amazing and the way the visuals match up with the music is a lot of fun.  Yes I will address the elephant and say what Kevin Spacey did in the past was horrendous, but to his credit.  He is playing a bad guy so you wont feel bad when things go wrong for him.  The whole movie shouldn’t have to suffer because of one person.

11. The Lego Batman Movie

Ben Affleck has nothing on Will Arnett

So that leaves the rest of my list.  You can listen to my choices for  10-6 over at Cinema Recall Podcast below

Cinema Recall Podcast: Best of 2017 Part One

5 – 1 will appear on an upcoming episode and I will be posting that  show next week

I was very lucky to be on several great podcast shows and I am beyond thrilled that these great, wonderful people were kind enough to have me on the show.

Let’s Chat with Revill and Friends

Chris is a wonderful podcaster who interviews tons of famous authors and celebrities.  People who are way more well known than me.  Anyways Chris thought it would be fun to talk with me and you know what, it was

Zombie Kitty Podcast

Recently Miss Zombie Kitty asked me to come on her show and discuss the 90’s kid flick Spy Kids. I said sure and what follows was a fun conversation about the movie. Filled with jokes, good insights and more

The DRP aka The Damien Riley Podcast

Good friend and podcaster Damien Riley did an episode reviewing Funny Games U.S. and asked if a guest wanted to step up and discuss this film further. I said sure and here is what followed. I enjoyed very much talking about this one of a kind home invasion flick

That is it for this week  and as promised I will post something next week  I haven’t been good at visiting this  site and responding to comments but I will try my best  OK.  Please visit me more at Cinema Recall  because I post things more there than here.

  1. Chris says:

Thanks for sharing your favorites Vern! Una I had not heard of, as with Mother! , it’s kind of a miracle got green-lit in this era.
Agree Get Out is one of the best directorial debuts in recent times. Glad you could respect Killing of a Sacred Deer even though you had issues with the tone. I think Sacred Deer also deals with topical issues(which you say in podcast Get Out manages to). Raw made me feel sick and I kind of admire it for its boldness. Your Name (your #6) I hope to check out soon.

Thank you Chris. I think I will have like Killing of a Sacred Deer the more times I see it. I think a great film is one you see and have new insights the more times you do. Thanks for listening good buddy

  2. Mr. Bobinsky says:

Lanthimos’ movies may be hard to digest. I think Lobster wasn’t an easy one. I loved it, but can easily understand why noy everybody will like it.
